Today, an estimated 1 million students around the world join in each year to pray for others. The Chowchilla Union High School District comprises a comprehensive four year academic high school, Chowchilla Union High School, Gateway Continuation.
As God grew the movement, it caught fire in other states and countries. This concept was then organized by youth leaders into “See you at the Pole,” and the idea caught fire in multiple states and continues to grow today. See You At The Pole is an annual, globally-recognized event during which students, staff and parents gather around the flag pole for a time of prayer, reading of Scripture, and song. It was dubbed See You at the Pole, and within the first year, 45,000 students were participating. They drove to different high schools and prayed at their flagpoles for God to move in their schools in a powerful way. Starting in 1990, this SYATP movement was birthed out of a small group of Texas teens who, after a gathering, felt a burden to pray for their schools like never before. In a time of increasing division and strife, there was a strong display of unity. From that point Buenos Aires is about the same distance. Esperanza Station, the Argentinean base at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, has a sign that says the South Pole is 3,000 kilometers (1,864 miles) away. One parent from Tullahoma, TN described what she saw take place in Facebook post: “Today and in the days leading up to this event all I saw was Unity, believers in one accord sharing Jesus with the world.” This same sentiment was expressed by students and parents across social media. When you are exploring the Antarctic Peninsula, you’re still a long way from the South Pole. Youth pastors can support you, parents can pray for you But you need to take the lead in planning and leading SYATP.
Put simply, the call to the students was, “Just Pray.” Whether it was a large event with months of planning or a handful of kids holding hands and saying simple prayers, the theme was the same: “Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you” (James 4:10).
